Keep stock matched between Shopify variants

Last updated 30 October 2026

Merchants often want several variants to sell from the same stock: ten units, however the customer picks the colour, label or option. Shopify does not have a built-in setting for this, because inventory is tracked per variant. These are the realistic ways to get the same result.

Option A: keep one variant and capture the choice another way

If the difference is only a choice such as an engraving, a colour printed to order or a gift message, you can sell a single variant and collect the choice with custom fields. Stock is then one number by design.

  • One real stock count, nothing to keep matched.
  • Needs a product-options or custom-fields app or theme support, and the choice no longer appears as a normal variant in reports.

Option B: bundles built from components

If each sellable item is a bundle of the same underlying components, a bundle app can derive each bundle's availability from the component stock. This fits cases where something is assembled from parts.

  • Works well for kits and sets.
  • Overkill when the variants are just different labels of one item.

Option C: link the variants

Keep ordinary variants and let an app copy every stock change to the others. A sale of one variant lowers that variant, and the app sets the rest to the same number, so the variants stay matched.

This is what a Douplo link does, per location. You create a link from a suggestion or by picking the variants yourself, review the numbers before and after, and confirm. The variants can be in one product or in different products. If you change your mind, within 2 minutes of creating a link, and if stock hasn't moved since, one click puts the stock back and removes it.

  • Variants stay normal in the admin, reports and your theme.
  • This is not a single shared count. The other variants are updated after a sale, not at the same instant. Within one product, Douplo adds up sales on different variants that land close together, so both are counted, but a customer could still buy the last unit of another variant in between. Keep a small safety buffer on very scarce items, or use Option A for limited stock.

How to choose

  • Only a choice, not a different item: use one variant (Option A).
  • An item built from parts: use bundles (Option B).
  • Different variants that really are the same item and need to stay visible as variants: link them (Option C).

Douplo links Shopify variants that are the same item, in one product or across products, so their stock stays matched, location by location. Get it on the Shopify App Store.
